Oltrepo Pavese is located in the Lombardy region of North-West Italy. It isn’t known much outside of Italy, however it is affectionately known as ‘Tuscany of The North’. It’s known for production of quality sparkling wines and reds from the Pinot Nero grape. However, there are some plantings of Barbera. After all, Piedmont and the town of Asti are located just west, which is famous for Barbera.
With this wine, expect a lovely smooth red wine, with hints of spice. The altitude and temperature in Northern Italy is somewhat cooler than in the South, so the reds here are slightly more restrained and lower in alcohol. This makes for lovely medium-bodied wine, with subtle tannins and elegant red fruit flavours.
